What We Do

A home is more than just four walls and a roof. It’s where love, hope, and safety come together. It’s where parents can breathe easier knowing their children are safe. It’s a space where children can have a quiet place to study and dream big. And it’s where neighbors come together to support and uplift one another. For Edisto Habitat for Humanity, home is the key.

Building homes is just where we start. Our programs and services are centered around meeting the needs of our residents. In addition to our new construction homeownership program, we offer essential services to ensure our residents have a safe and healthy place to live.
In February 2026, Edisto Habitat for Humanity will celebrate a monumental milestone with the groundbreaking of our 100th Home Block, kicking off with the construction of our 100th Habitat Home. The Home Block will be home to Edisto Habitat house numbers 100 - 106.

We partner with local, state, and federal organizations to stay ahead of dangerous weather and disasters, inform the community, provide disaster plans, and restore homes from disasters. In 2020, we partnered with community organizations to rebuild and repair 31 homes damaged by tornadoes in North and Neeses.

When Hurricane Helene hit our communities, we worked side by side with our community partners, including the American Red Cross, to deliver water and other essential supplies throughout our area. Even after a year of the storm, many residents remained displaced. Thanks to various grants and donations, we had the opportunity to expand our disaster recovery services and repair six homes in Orangeburg and the surrounding area. In addition to these repairs, we expanded our usual service area to restore two homes in Bamburg County. Discover
how we support communities in times of disaster.

Since 1991, Edisto Habitat for Humanity has brought people together to provide opportunities to achieve homeownership and, in turn, create a safe community.

The Brush with Kindness Ramp/Repair Program is designed to ensure that our residents can safely access their homes while also supporting our Aging in Place program, which aims to keep older adults in their homes for as long as possible, thereby decreasing the need for new housing. Since launching three years ago, 50 ramps have been completed, with several others to be built by the end of the year. See how we're helping our residents stay safe.
As part of our Financial Stability Program, we provide financial education opportunities for our local community as well as our family partners. We believe that financial education builds a more solid foundation for long-term personal success and helps alleviate barriers on the path to creating long-term generational wealth. Our community classes cover topics such as financial life skills, budgeting and credit workshops, retirement planning, and asset and family protection.
In addition to financial readiness, we provide opportunities to introduce people to workplace skills. Working with partner organizations, Job Corps and Goodwill, we help to provide employment opportunities and work/life skills at The Homestore for their clients and programs.

The Homestore provides workplace skills and jobs for our community and partner organizations like Goodwill and Jobs Corps of Bamburg to help provide jobs for their clients.

We empower through shelter.

No matter who you are or where you've come from, we all deserve to live in a well-built home in a safe neighborhood. For many families, this goal would not be a reality without Edisto Habitat for Humanity, which provides a "hand-up" out of substandard housing and into a home of their own.
Edisto Habitat for Humanity works with families, volunteers, local businesses, community partners, and donors to ensure that more people in Orangeburg County and our surrounding areas can live in affordable and safe homes.

Affordable homeownership is a transformative force that creates the conditions for families to break free from stress and fear, fostering stability and confidence. Studies show that strong and stable households are the bedrock of child development and growth. When a home becomes a nurturing environment for health and safety, families can truly thrive. Homeownership not only allows families to save for the future and invest in educational opportunities but also opens doors to better job opportunities and long-term career growth, instilling hope and optimism.

Habitat for Humanity International
Driven by the vision that everyone deserves a safe, healthy place to call home, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in over 1,000 communities throughout the U.S. and in over 70 countries.  In that time, more than 22 million people worldwide have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home.
