Disaster Awareness, Preparedness & Response

Awareness

We partner with local, state, and federal organizations to stay ahead of dangerous weather and disasters to inform the community and provide disaster plans and restore homes from disasters.

One of our partners, South Carolina Emergency Management Division, provides many resources on their website to learn about possible disasters and how to plan.

We are active members of VOAD
, the South Carolina Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. The mission of VOAD is to strengthen the capabilities of organizations by working together to respond to communities affected by disaster in South Carolina.

Response

In 2021 and 2022, we gave out more than 50,000 masks to protect our community from the dangers of COVID. We helped raise mortgage relief funds and secured grants to aid families in remaining in their homes during the worst parts of the pandemic.

During this time, we were awarded a grant from the Central Carolina Community Foundation and partners of the One SC Fund, to provide approximately 4,000 pounds of food to our other community partners, including the Orangeburg community including the Samaritan House, First Baptist Church Soup Kitchen, and many other families.
After storms devastated our area in 2021, we partnered with local organizations to help with emergency repairs for the homes of 31 families in North and Neeses that were damaged by tornadoes.
After the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Edisto Habitat joined state agencies and other partners to distribute building materials and other essential supplies, including food and water, to Santee, Bowman, Orangeburg, Aiken, and Edgefield. As part of our disaster awareness, preparation, and recovery initiatives, we continue to act as advocates for our state and communities.

We continue to provide our expertise to community partners and organizations, acting as advocates for additional funding, such as grants, to support disaster recovery.

Preparedness

Disasters can strike at any moment, with little notice. In order to protect your home and family, it is important to be prepared. Habitat helps homeowners make a family preparedness plan, put together a supply kit and be ready to respond to common hazards in our community.
